Snapping
Turtle This
guy isn't very unusual but he was fun to catch. We had spotted him in
shallow muddy water near an old mill. Right next to him was a large
buck so we saw an excellent opportunity. I took a stick and
disturbed the water on his side opposite the bucket. Just as
expected he dashed into it. Quickly I grab the buckets handle and
pulled him out of the water. I dumped him onto the ground for a
better look. He looked prehistoric with his massive size, large
clawed feet and spiny tail. He reminded me of the Japanese sci-fi
turtle Gamera. He was very upset and began snapping at us with his
powerful jaw. Using my heel, I corralled him as Teak fetched the
camera. Growing tired of chasing the beast I carefully flipped him on his
back to buy us more time. I figured it would take him quite a while to get turned
over again.
How wrong I was! Snapping turtles have very long neck. In second he
was back on his feet and snapping at us again. Once we had our
shots, I directed him back into the bucket and dropped him back in
the water.
